Dragon trees (Dracaena marginata) are low-maintenance, attractive houseplants with narrow, arching leaves that are green with red or purple margins. They're perfect for adding height and interest to your indoor space. Follow these care instructions to keep your dragon tree healthy and thriving:

  1. Light: Place your dragon tree in a location with bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions but may become leggy and lose some of its vibrant colors. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.

  2. Water: Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Water your dragon tree thoroughly until it drains from the bottom of the pot, and then allow the excess water to drain completely. Be cautious not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.

  3. Humidity: Dragon trees can tolerate average indoor humidity levels but will appreciate a boost in humidity, especially during dry winter months. To increase humidity, you can place a tray filled with water and pebbles underneath the pot, mist the leaves occasionally, or use a humidifier.

  4. Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 65-80°F (18-27°C) for optimal growth. Dragon trees can tolerate a range of temperatures but avoid exposing them to temperatures below 55°F (13°C) or sudden temperature changes.

  5. Fertilizer: Feed your dragon tree with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Use a half-strength solution to avoid over-fertilizing. Reduce feeding to once every 2-3 months during fall and winter.

  6. Pruning: Prune your dragon tree as needed to maintain its shape and size. Remove any yellow or brown leaves and trim the tips if they become damaged. You can also pinch back the growing tips to encourage bushier growth.

  7. Repotting: Repot your dragon tree every 2-3 years or when the roots outgrow the pot. Choose a well-draining potting mix and a pot that is 1-2 inches larger in diameter than the current one. Be gentle when handling the roots, and water the plant thoroughly after repotting.

  8. Pest control: Keep an eye out for common pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Pet-friendly or toxic to pets?

According to the ASPCA, dragon trees (Dracaena marginata) are toxic to cats and dogs. If ingested, they can cause symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased salivation, and dilated pupils in cats due to the presence of saponins. It's best to keep your dragon tree out of reach of pets to prevent any potential health issues. If you suspect your pet has ingested any part of the plant, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Best sunscreen
Size: 5 Ounce (Pack of 1)
My family and I use only Blue Lizard sunscreen. We think it's coverage and sun protection works best.

Waterproof
Size: 5 Ounce (Pack of 1)
This product is great for kids in the pool or ocean. It is very waterproof and you can even see the water beading on top of the sunscreen. It doesn't go on super clear, which can be an advantage for determining coverage. One other unique feature is the bottle itself changes color to indicate it is currently exposed to UV light although that is basically anytime you walk outside in daytime.

Good sun protection but leaves white streaks after sweating
Size: 5 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I really wanted to like this sunscreen after seeing it make a lot of lists for best sunscreen for runners. But for whatever reason, about 15-20 minutes into my runs and I've started really sweating, I see white streaks in my elbow crease. I've started developing weird tan lines in my elbow crease if I don't consciously try to re-rub and re-spread the sunscreen in my elbows periodically during my runs. If I only use the sunscreen for lower impact activities, I don't get the white streaks. It's as if from the sweat it pools the minerals from the sunscreen into my elbow crease. But yet I don't have that problem with the sweat mix with my sunscreen on other parts of my body. I've also switched to Australian Gold Botanical Mineral sunscreen which ironically isn't meant for sports, but I don't have the elbow crease white streaks issue with that sunscreen. I will say, this Blue Lizard sunscreen does rub and spread easily and doesn't leave a white cast after rubbing it into my skin. Although it does feel mildly greasy after I'm done applying it everywhere. I've switch to Australian Gold Botanical Mineral sunscreen which doesn't feel greasy but it does leave a slight white cast on my tan skin, but I'll rather have that than deal with frequently needing to re-rub/re-spread the sunscreen in my elbow creases when white streaks form.

Go to sunscreen!
Size: 5 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Mineral based sunscreen was recommended to me after second degree burns. I love how the bottle changes color when UV is bad.
